A Brief Overview of Some Common Gem Stones

Gem Stones have fascinated man since the beginning of time. Even prehistoric man was drawn to the glimmer of shinny pebbles in the sand. Gem stones are natures rarest products but to be considered a gemstone they must possess three attributes, rarity, color, and of course beauty. A gemstone is a piece of mineral that is used to make jewelry however certain rocks such as lapis lazuli and organic material such as amber are classified as gem stones even thought they are not. I have listed a few of the most common stones used today.

Quartz is the second most-abundant mineral on Earth. There are many different varieties of Quartz and several are semi-precious gem stones. The ideal shape of quartz is a six sided prism. The ancient Romans believed quartz to be water that had been permanently frozen. Sometimes referred to as the poor man's diamond this stone is revered to have the most powerful healing properties of all gem stones.

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. This deep purple color has made it the stone of royalty for many thousands of years. Amethyst can occur as six sided crystals or mass stones or they can form in or around a host stone. Through out history amethyst has been used to guard against drunkenness and is thought to be helpful in overcoming addiction. It has been used for hearing disorders, insomnia, headaches and other pain. Some sources suggest it is used to stabilize mental disorders. It has been known make the wearer more gentle.

Citrine is the variety of quartz ranging in color from yellow to orange and even reddish brown. Most of the world's citrine comes from Brazil but it can be found in Russia, France and Madagascar. The darker the color of this stone the more highly prized and more valuable. People have been drawn to this stone for courage and self discipline. It has been used over time to treat depression.

Rose Quartz is the pink variety of quartz. The color is due to trace amounts of iron in the mineral. Believed to prevent wrinkles and encourage a beautiful complexion rose quartz is the stone of warmth and love.

Garnet occurs in every color except blue and is named for their color. In earlier times, garnets were exchanged as gifts between friends to demonstrate their affection for each other and to insure that they meet again. Garnet's powers include healing, strength, and protection and it is often worn to relieve inflammations of the skin. It is also believed to regulate the heart and blood flow and aid in curing depression.

Sodalite is a deep blue relatively hard but fragile mineral that was discovered in 1811 named for its sodium content. It is said to clear the mind and create solidarity, also known as the group stone. It is wonderful stone to use to aid in digestion and weight loss.

Fluorite derived from the Latin meaning to flow because of its use in iron smelting. Fluorite is a colorful mineral both in visible and UV light. Fluorite comes in a wide range of colors and has subsequently been dubbed "the most colorful mineral in the world". Fluorite is said help increase your concentration, and heightens your intuition. It clears the mind helps you see the reality of any given situation.

For thousands of years, individual gemstones have been associated with different healing and strengthening properties in the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual realms. The precious and semi-precious gemstones have been crafted into jewelry an carried in pockets around the world.
